These lovely clients were looking to tidy up their kitchen environment, make the Butlers pantry more functional and effective. It was time for a change and a desire to have appliances and products out of sight. With tall ceilings at their disposal, kitchen storage was to be better used. The colour scheme would be a contemporary kitchen without looking out of place in this period home. A change from heavy rich red timbers to more modern warm grey grains, offset with a clean off white overhead cabinets and bright benches lifted the room immediately. The use of Matt finish for the fine grain and high gloss finish for the whites accentuates the contrast.
Stream-lining the height and position of the ovens has brought them to a perfect working height, reducing any strain on the chefs back. The Miele integrated Microwave and integrated main oven are set in line with the overhead cabinets to keep the lines clean and simple. A mixture of ‘push to open doors and ‘pull from under’ doors enables the handle-less look that everybody seems to want now. The grain has been run horizontally across the kitchen cabinets to stretch out the width of the space. The use of a waterfall end to the Island provides the impression that the bench goes on forever.
What was a tight space with plain fixed height shelving, is now a bright easily accessible Butler’s Pantry. All of the overhead shelving can be adjusted to accommodate foods and not the other way around. The everyday appliances are now in this room and simply sliding the door closed tidies the kitchen. The central location of the Butler’s Pantry makes it an incredibly effective flow of product during food preparation. Multiple family members can use the kitchen without trod-ding on each other. The slide-out open drawers make it easy to find small appliances without having to open and shut everything.
Some building works were performed by Select Kitchens to make the space more practical. The wall to the left of the Butler’s Pantry was straightened out to alleviate a dead corner and the space behind this wall was converted to useful cleaning ware storage.
Plenty of drawers with heaps of extra storage, an integrated Bin system, Integrated Dishwasher, Under-slung Sink bowls and a sharp, but not too modern Tap, bring this overall kitchen plan together. The Smoked mirror glass tops off the creation and black power points have been used to minimize their impact.
